A Brief History of Pinotage

Pinotage is a grape variety developed by Abraham Izak Perold in South Africa in 1924. Perold was seeking to combine the greatest characteristics of the Pinot noir, a vine that produces excellent wine but is hard to grow, and a strong Hermitage grape. Elsenburg produced the first wine in 1941 and around the same time, Paul Sauer and Danie Rossouw planted Pinotage vines at the Kanonkop Estate, whose wines have gone on to become famous and can age for up to 25 years.

For the first time, a Pinotage-based Bellevue wine was named champion wine. The Bellevue wine was the first to feature Pinotage on its label when Stellenbosch Farmer's Winery (SFW) released it under the Lanzerac brand in 1961.

The Winemaking Process

During the harvest season, Pinotage grapes are harvested regularly. The must is then fermented for five days to a week after pressing before being exposed to malolactic fermentation. After that, the wine is left to mature for around eighteen months in French oak casks.

French barrels are a desirable fermentation means for Pinotage because they permit cold and long fermentation times, which reduce volatile esters, which are commonly expressed in the finished wine product as volatile acidity.

How Does Pinotage Taste?

With rich, ripe fruit notes, Pinotage has a powerful, sweet jammy flavor with an earthy smoky finish. Due to the high sugar concentration in the grapes, Pinotage is a full-bodied wine that leaves your palate lingering with sweetness. It's a grape with a high alcohol by volume (ABV) and modest tannin levels.

The scents of high-quality Pinotage are earthy and flowery. Low-quality Pinotage is often characterized by unpleasant nail polish remover or rubber odors. Find the best Pinotage wines with a high-quality label at the Thirsty Oak wine store.

While most Pinotage wines are available ad varietals, some brands produce red blends with other grapes like Shiraz. Each of the grapes contributes its strengths, creating a masterpiece.

How do I Serve Pinotage?

Pinotage should be served at a temperature of 17-18°C. The wine will taste flat and lose its aromas and characteristics if served at a higher temperature. Always serve chilled, and allow it to sweat in the glass for about 15 minutes before drinking. If the wine releases the aromas slowly and enhances the pleasure of drinking, it will be a bonus. It will also aid in the identification of its aromas.
